Muhammad faced an even more serious problem during the return trip when Aisha disappeared on him for a day. Whenever he went on a raid, he would bring along a wife or two. They rode in tasseled, curtained howdahs, and their role was to keep Muhammad sexually satisfied and take care of chores such as preparing food and keeping the tent neat and tidy. But when they were still a day away from Yathrib, after the long column had stopped for rest, it was discovered that Aisha was not in her howdah, nor was she anywhere else in the long column. Vanished! Everything came to a halt while Muhammad considered what to do. He questioned the men who had lifted her howdah onto the camel. It was fastened to poles underneath, and four men would each grab an end and lift it onto the camel while it was kneeling. The whole contraption was secured with ropes and straps. They thought she was inside it, but it was curtained so they had no way to know for sure; they simply assumed her to be inside, and besides she was a young girl and did not weigh much. Muhammad considered the angles. She could not have run away. Who would run away in the middle of the desert? And why would she run away? The only explanation was that somehow she got left behind. He would have to send out a search party.
It proved unnecessary. While he was assigning people to the task, a camel appeared in the distance, and as it came closer they could see a smallish veiled figure sitting on top and a man on foot leading the camel by a rope. It took a while for these solitary figures to reach the army, and when they did everyone could see it was Aisha on the camel, and it was led by a young man named Safwan. An embarrassed Aisha explained to Muhammad what happened: She had gotten left behind the evening before. Muhammad had given the order to move out after the sun went down, and she had hastened out into the surrounding desert to relieve herself before the journey commenced. On the way back she realized that the prized Zafar necklace her mother had given as a wedding present had fallen from her neck. She went back in search of it. By the time she found it, the army had departed. She did the only thing that was possible to do under such circumstances, which was to sit down, wrap herself up, and hope and pray they would soon discover the empty howdah and return for her. At some point Safwan, a young convert from one of the southern Bedouin tribes who had fallen behind the army after it departed from the Mustaliq territory, came riding up on his camel. When she saw him she covered her face because by then Muhammad had already commanded the full-face cover. Safwan gallantly knelt his camel, helped her to climb onto the saddle, and without a word led the camel in the direction the army had taken.
